- Crystal Palace beaten by Liverpool
- Adam Wharton hailed fans
- English midfielder returned from injury
Adam Wharton was full of praise for Crystal Palace fans for their support during the 3-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield. The Eagles suffered defeat but the visiting supporters were with the team throughout.
Alexander Isak and Andy Robertson gave the hosts a two-nil lead by half-time. Daniel Munoz responded with a controversial goal that caused fury from the Kop and Arne Slot.
Liverpool eventually secured all three points thanks to Florian Wirtz’s late strike. It wasn’t to be for Oliver Glasner’s men but fans definitely turned up on the day.
Wharton Praises Palace Support
Wharton acknowledged the fans following the defeat and vowed to repay them with a successful end to the season. He told club media:
“The away end was full, loud all game and this is what we need. I think you saw it in the home game at Fiorentina, the atmosphere was electric and it definitely makes a difference for us. They always back us home and away and we’re very grateful for that.”
The defeat means Palace’s hopes of qualifying for Europe via the Premier League are now all but over. But Wharton wants to finish the campaign strongly:
“There’s seven games left maybe, hopefully they back us through them, I’m sure they will, they always do. Hopefully we can repay them and finish the season strong.”
The first of the seven remaining games for now is a trip to Poland on Thursday to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League semi-final. A special European campaign has seen fans follow the team around the continent and they will undoubtedly be the 12th man at Henryk-Reyman-Stadium in Krakow.
Wharton Returned to Action
Wharton was named in Glasner’s starting lineup and put in a strong performance after recovering from an Adductor injury. He sat out last Monday’s 0-0 draw against West Ham United but looks fully fit and ready for the Conference League clash.
The 22-year-old came off in the first half of the Eagles’ 2-1 loss (4-2 win on aggregate) against Fiorentina. A similar problem arose to that which caused him to withdraw from international duty with England during March’s break.
Wharton has been vital this season and will undoubtedly be leaned on to help the South Londoners prevail over Shakhtar. He has made 45 appearances across competitions, posting seven assists.
