- Adam Wharton starred in Crystal Palace UECL win
- Thomas Tuchel left him out of England squad
- Eagles star reacts to decision
Thomas Tuchel claimed that Adam Wharton had “lost a bit of form” in March when explaining why the Crystal Palace midfielder hadn’t made England’s squad for the World Cup. The German coach’s comments bemused Eagles fans.
Wharton had probably enjoyed his best period of the season, and Tuchel’s claim didn’t measure up. He pulled the strings at the heart of Oliver Glasner’s midfield, helping Palace reach the Conference League final.
Last night, the 22-year-old showed just why many were in disbelief over his omission. He put in a wonderful performance in a 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano as his side lifted the European trophy.
Wharton leaves Tuchel looking foolish
Wharton starred alongside Daichi Kamada in midfield and the pair have been excellent throughout the Conference League campaign. It was the Englishman’s shot from long range that led to Jean-Philippe Mateta pouncing and scoring the winner from close range.
Everything he touched seemed to turn to gold, and his ball-playing abilities were on display. Even Germany legend Lothar Matthaus was blown away on commentary.

Wharton somehow didn’t manage to convince Tuchel that he deserved a place on the plane. Apparently, despite Brentford’s Jordan Henderson being more worthy of a call-up at the age of 35.
If England fail to win the World Cup, Tuchel will only have himself to blame for snubbing arguably the most technically gifted midfielder in the country. Other international giants would probably make him a focus of their team.
“Not gonna cry about it” – Wharton on England snub
Wharton broke his silence over his omission from England’s World Cup squad, and he gave the perfect response. He told reporters after the final (via Sky Sports):
“It’s just part of football. It was never guaranteed I was gonna go, I knew that. When he called me, he just told me I wasn’t there. He said it was close. But like I said, this is football. I’m not gonna sit here and cry about it.”
Wharton instead focused on two more games with Palace, the first of which came against Arsenal last Sunday. He came on in the second half but picked up an ankle injury, which forced him off.
There were concerns that he’d be unavailable for last night’s final, but he returned and started in Leipzig. He suggested that he played through the pain barrier, and again, that’s just the sort of mentality you want from a player in a World Cup squad.
