- Man Utd interested in Jean-Philippe Mateta
- Why the French striker should stay at Crystal Palace
- Eagles will have a new manager in charge
Crystal Palace face a familiar summer battle, with reports emerging that Manchester United are actively plotting a move for Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Red Devils have reportedly placed the Frenchman on their shortlist.
They view him as the ideal Premier League-proven target man to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko and replace Joshua Zirkzee. With Mateta entering the final year of his contract and Oliver Glasner having departed Selhurst Park, United are on alert.
However, if Mateta wants to protect his career trajectory and legendary status, he must flatly snub a move to Old Trafford. His chances of playing regular football decrease if he heads to Manchester.
Much for Mateta to ponder
First and foremost, Mateta is currently the main man at Selhurst Park. He just cemented his status as an all-time Palace hero by scoring the winning goal to win the Eagles the Europa Conference League title.
Out of his 62 total goals for the club, a staggering 33 have come in the last two seasons alone. He has evolved from an inconsistent rotation option into a truly elite European striker.
Moving to United would put all of that hard-earned momentum at risk. The Red Devils are looking for “depth”, meaning Mateta would swap his undisputed starting role at Palace for a backup plan for Sesko.
At 28 years old and heading to the World Cup, Mateta is in his absolute prime. He cannot afford to waste it sitting on the Old Trafford bench, brought on merely to chase games as a physical plan B.
Furthermore, United’s attack is undergoing a massive, unpredictable refresh under a new setup. Selhurst Park offers him the stability to keep thriving, even in a post-Glasner era. While the club enters a new chapter, the hierarchy must move fast to present a compelling vision and offer him a lucrative new contract.
Stay at Selhurst
Mateta has the keys to South London. He is worshipped by the fans, guaranteed minutes, and fresh off delivering European silverware. Moving to the United to be a rotational squad filler would be a massive step backwards. For his own sake, JP must stay right where he is adored.
The Frenchman joined Palace from Mainz in January 2022 for just £9m. He’s since won the FA Cup, Community Shield and the Conference League.
