Chibuike Nwaiwu Deals Major Setback to Eagles’ Defensive Plans

Crystal Palace have suffered a significant late setback in their summer search for a centre-back, with target Chibuike Nwaiwu pouring cold water on a potential move to Selhurst Park.

The Eagles turned their attention to the 23-year-old Trabzonspor star as they scramble to replace Maxence Lacroix following his high-profile move to Chelsea. Palace joined Premier League rivals Fulham in the race for the Super Eagles defender, even testing Trabzonspor’s resolve with a formal proposal worth around €30m

However, Nwaiwu’s latest comments following Trabzonspor’s 2-1 Süper Lig victory over İstanbul Başakşehir reveal that personal stability now dictates his career trajectory far more than a move to London.

Having welcomed a daughter with his partner Melissa in May, the Nigerian international has settled seamlessly into life on the Black Sea coast since moving from Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC in January.

Family Happiness Trumps Premier League Ambition

Speaking after playing a full part in Sunday’s victory, Nwaiwu directly addressed the relentless transfer speculation linking him with a switch to South London.

“I saw the news you mentioned. However, I want to focus on my football and the game I’m playing. I already have a contract,” Nwaiwu stated via local outlet Haber61.

The powerful defender then outlined the emotional reasons why staying put in Trabzon appeals far more than uprooting his young family

“Last season I was not single either. I had a girlfriend and she was pregnant. This season our child was born. I am now with my child and my girlfriend. We are in Trabzon with my family and we are very happy here.”

The statement adds crucial context for Palace chiefs. Having established himself in Trabzonspor’s backline making 21 appearances, scoring three goals, and lifting the Turkish Cup last term the young centre-back clearly values the immediate stability for his newborn daughter over another major domestic relocation.

Trabzonspor Stand Firm on €35m Valuation

From a financial standpoint, Palace were already facing an uphill battle to strike a deal with the Turkish club according to reports

Trabzonspor maintain total control over Nwaiwu’s destiny thanks to a long-term contract running through to June 2030. Fulham initially saw bids up to €28m knocked back, while Palace’s €30m approach similarly fell short. Trabzonspor executives have refused to budge on their firm €35m asking price.

With Nwaiwu reluctant to push for an exit and Trabzonspor holding out for top money, Pierre Sage and the Palace recruitment team must look elsewhere to solve their defensive shortage before the transfer window closes.
