Crystal Palace have sent a firm, uncompromising message across North-West England: Adam Wharton is going nowhere.
Manchester City have raided the market in search of urgent midfield reinforcements following a high-profile engine-room clearout, with Pep Guardiola’s successor Enzo Maresca losing Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Tijjani Reijnders in quick succession.
City transfer chiefs submitted a late inquiry for Palace’s 22-year-old maestro. But the response from Selhurst Park was immediate, uncompromising, and absolute.
Hands Off Our Engine Room
Palace bosses have made it clear that Wharton will not be sold in the final days of the transfer window, regardless of the money thrown their way.
Eagles manager Pierre Sage addressed the noise directly, reinforcing the club’s firm boundary:
“We sold big players and now I think it’s not the moment to do that,” Sage stated. “Adam can play at a big club, but one year with us under a new dynamic will be good for him. We need him.”
With three years remaining on his contract, Wharton remains the cornerstone of Palace’s tactical identity. Leaving a massive void in midfield at this stage of the window was never an option.
City Forced onto Alternative Targets
With the door slammed shut on Wharton, City have had to quickly pivot.
With Chelsea sticking to their £120m valuation on Enzo Fernández, City are now weighing up a £51m move for Roma’s Manu Koné.
Manchester United had previously spoken to Koné’s representatives, but their decision to finalise a £70m deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba clears the runway for City to pursue the former Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder without a bidding war.
For Palace supporters, holding the line on Wharton represents a major statement of intent.
Rather than sanctioning late departures for key stars, the Eagles are locking down their core while bolstering their squad—evidenced by the incoming loan capture of defender Axel Disasi from Chelsea.
City may have the financial muscle, but Selhurst Park isn’t opening its gates for anyone this close to the deadline.
