Crystal Palace Transfer News: Eagles Handed Deadline Loophole in Search for New Midfielder

Crystal Palace are actively searching the market for a central midfielder before the summer transfer window slams shut on Tuesday, September 1.

The Eagles want to furnish new manager Pierre Sage with additional engine-room reinforcements. However, severe UEFA Squad Cost Ratio constraints mean the Selhurst Park hierarchy cannot simply splash limitless cash.

That financial reality explains why Palace have turned repeatedly to the free-agent market this summer, landing both Óscar Mingueza and Takehiro Tomiyasu on zero-transfer-fee arrangements to stretch their budget.

The search for midfield control carries added urgency following Palace’s bleak start to the Premier League campaign. Sage’s side slumped to a dismal 2-0 defeat against Everton at Hill Dickinson on opening weekend, exposing glaring holes in transition and a frustrating lack of incision in the middle third.

Free-Agent Option Surges onto the Radar

While Palace remain locked in continuous negotiations with Auxerre for Kevin Danois in a deal that could top £25 million, an intriguing alternative has suddenly emerged.

Former Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo is officially available on a free transfer after the Italian giants mutually terminated his contract in Turin. Juventus originally shelled out an astronomical €82m (£70m) to land the Brazilian from Barcelona back in June 2020, but the move quickly turned into a nightmare.

The 30-year-old spent last season on loan at Grêmio, making 31 appearances while battling recurring hamstring injuries that sidelined him for 12 matches.

Italian outlet Tutto Juve previously reported that Palace tracked Arthur back in June 2024. Given the club’s strict budgetary parameters and ongoing pursuit of bargain deals, his sudden free agency naturally raises eyebrows across South London.

Doucouré Return Eases Pressure as Free-Agent Loophole Remains

Adding Arthur would certainly divide opinion among the fanbase. The South American struggled desperately during a brief loan spell at Liverpool in 2022, and many supporters question whether he offers any upgrade over dependable internal options like Will Hughes or Jefferson Lerma.

Fortunately for Sage, help is already arriving from within. The Palace boss confirmed this week that Cheick Doucouré is finally “able to start” after enduring a horrific injury-plagued year, handing the midfield an immediate tactical boost.

Crucially, Palace hold all the cards if they decide to explore a move for Arthur or any other unattached player. Because free agents can sign outside the official registration window, the September 1 deadline creates zero pressure on Selhurst Park chiefs to rush a decision.
