The summer transfer carousel between Stamford Bridge and South London has turned once more, delivering a pragmatic solution to a gaping defensive void.
Crystal Palace have officially completed the signing of Axel Disasi on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The 28-year-old French international arrives at Selhurst Park for the 2026/27 campaign, stepping directly into the backline to replace Maxence Lacroix following the defender’s £52 million move to West London earlier in the window.
Palace will pay a straight loan fee to Chelsea, though the agreement excludes any option or obligation to purchase the centre-back next summer.
The move comes after Disasi successfully rebuilt his standing during a productive loan spell at West Ham in the second half of last season. That stint offered a timely reboot following a frustrating period at Chelsea, who signed him from Monaco for £38.8 million in August 2023 before exiling him from first-team activities earlier this summer.
The French connection at SE25
Despite lacking pre-season minutes, Disasi expressed immediate enthusiasm about committing to Pierre Sage’s project after sealing his move to South London.
Speaking to Palace TV, Disasi admitted: “I’m very happy. The club has been going in a very good direction, so I think it was the right place for me to keep going. I know that it’s very tough to play against Palace at Selhurst Park, so I’m looking forward to being on the other side now!”
When pressed on what drew him to SE25, the central defender highlighted his immediate rapport with the club and the presence of his countryman in the dugout.
“More just like a feeling, a good atmosphere,” Disasi explained. “I think as well the fact that the Manager is French helps a lot! The club, the past two or three years, has been going in a very good direction, so I think it was the right place for me to keep going.”
Disasi arrives with a strong domestic and European pedigree. Boasting five senior caps for France—including an appearance in the 2022 World Cup Final and over 325 senior career appearances, he brings crucial leadership to a dressing room targeting further progress in Europe.
“When we see the fact that the club has won three trophies in last two years, I think that we are all ambitious and we take this competition [the Europa League] very seriously,” Disasi noted. “We’re going to work every day to go as far as possible.”
European pedigree and Premier League experience
Entering his fourth consecutive campaign in English football following spells at Chelsea, Aston Villa, and West Ham, Disasi also provides proven continental experience. He features 22 appearances across the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, primarily built during his tenure with Monaco.
“I had a great time in the Europa League with Monaco too,” he said. “I scored some good goals and played against great teams as well. I’m very excited as well to play again in this competition because I think it’s a really good competition with very tough opponents, so I’m very excited about this.”
His familiarity with the pace of English football removes the typical adjustment period for foreign recruits.
“The Premier League was one of my targets since I was young,” Disasi reflected. “When I was young, I’d been watching games and games of the Premier League, so I was very excited to get here – and now it’s been three years I’ve been in this league and I really enjoy it.”
Home debut looming against Manchester City
Disasi could make his Palace debut as early as Friday, when Sage’s side host Manchester City at Selhurst Park for their first home matchday of the 2026/27 season.
Having featured at Selhurst as an opposition player for Chelsea, Aston Villa, and West Ham, the defender recalled the hostile environment that now acts as his home advantage.
“What comes to my mind first is these games I played with Chelsea, in my first year in England. They’re my first memories about the stadium,” Disasi recalled. “I know that it’s very tough to play against Palace when they’re at home. The fans are pushing very, very hard – so I’m looking forward to being on the other side now.”
Offering fans a glimpse into his playing style, Disasi outlined the passion he intends to bring to Sage’s back three.
“I’m a defender with a lot of passion, let’s put it like this. I love to defend very hard. I love to work for the team and just help my team the best that I can,” he stated. “We have a big game coming up on Friday, so we will obviously need the fans to get the three points, because every match we need to get the three points. I’m very excited to play this game – and I hope that they’re going to push us to win this game.”
Axel Disasi’s arrival provides Pierre Sage with an immediate, battle-tested solution at the heart of Crystal Palace’s defence. By securing a player boasting over 300 career appearances and World Cup final pedigree, the club has deftly filled the void left by Maxence Lacroix without compromising financial flexibility.
Disasi’s European experience and deep familiarity with English football give the squad a crucial, stabilizing presence as they navigate both domestic challenges and an ambitious Europa League campaign.
