Crystal Palace have no choice but to sack Pierre Sage after Brighton loss

Pierre Sage’s future at Crystal Palace is under massive scrutiny after Sunday’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton. Crystal Palace is backing Sage publicly, but they are looking at possible options if they decide to make a change.

Pierre Sage has won only two Premier League games since taking charge, against Fulham and Nottingham Forest. Losing 3-2 to Lyon in midweek before being thrashed by Brighton has made his position more difficult, with Palace now preparing for Thursday’s Europa League trip to Besiktas.

Now, Pierre Sage sacking is on the cards as Crystal Palace have failed to turn the results to their favour.

Crystal Palace have no choice on Pierre Sage sacking

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes the Brighton result could be too much for Sage to recover from. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown questioned whether the Palace boss could remain in charge following such a heavy defeat against his side’s biggest rivals.

“It was a disastrous result for Crystal Palace and that will be very difficult to come back from,” Brown told Football Insider.

“I don’t care who you are, which club you’re in charge of, if you go away from home against your biggest rivals and get beat 5-0, you can’t survive that.

“Especially when there has already been pressure on his position and there are obviously doubts from the higher-ups at the club, a defeat like that is the beginning of the end.

“Whether it happens now or a bit further down the line, I’m sorry to say it but I think he’s a dead man walking now, because that is almost impossible to come back from.

“The fans aren’t happy, the players won’t be happy, the board won’t be happy, so I don’t see how Sage can stay in the job for much longer in all honesty. They have no choice.”

Palace already considering alternatives

The pressure on Sage comes with Palace reportedly looking at four possible replacements if they decide to change manager. Rob Edwards, Scott Parker, Kieran McKenna and Swansea City boss Vitor Matos have all been linked with the job.

Crystal Palace are continuing to back Sage publicly, but another defeat would bring further pressure. The Frenchman has little time to address the problems exposed against Brighton, with Thursday’s trip to Besiktas his next opportunity in the Europa League.

Palace need a reaction after conceding five goals to their fiercest rivals. Sage’s immediate task is to get his players organised and competing again, but the reports of potential replacements leave him with growing uncertainty over his future at Selhurst Park.
