Crystal Palace are in hot water after an embarrassing 5-0 defeat against Brighton.
Despite a decent summer transfer window and Pierre Sage coming in, Crystal Palace have failed to make an impact this season.
Quinten Timber arrived at Crystal Palace with high hopes and potential, but he has failed to hit the numbers consistently. He has come under criticism following Crystal Palace’s heavy defeat to Brighton, with former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart questioning whether the midfielder is suited to playing further forward.
Timber started Sunday’s 5-0 loss at the Amex Stadium but was taken off at half-time after Palace went into the break three goals behind.
The 24-year-old has made eight appearances for the Eagles and was recently called up to the Netherlands squad for their Nations League matches. His international break was also a disaster and he was called out by Dutch media for his lackluster performances.
Van der Vaart believes Quinten Timber must change his approach
Van der Vaart believes Timber wants to play as a number eight or number 10, but thinks his strengths lie deeper in midfield.
“He needs to focus on one thing. He would like to be a number 10 or 8”, Van der Vaart said, as quoted by Dutch outlet Utrecht Fans.
“But he is not good enough for that and he thinks he is too good to play as a defensive midfielder.
“He needs to make a choice.
“I think he should win the ball back and play it to the boys who can actually deliver the pass.
“He should then focus on a different position in a defensive role.
“I think he could become a brilliant player that way.”
Van der Vaart believes the Dutchman could become a much better player by concentrating on recovering possession and distributing the ball to more creative teammates.
