From ‘worst Dutch’ to ‘headless chicken’, Dutch journalist slams Palace midfielder

Crystal Palace midfielder Quinten Timber has once again come under fire from Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen after another difficult international appearance for the Netherlands.

Quinten Timber joined Crystal Palace from Marseille during the summer and signed a contract keeping him at Selhurst Park until 2031. He has made a strong start at club level, featuring in three Premier League matches as well as the Europa League and EFL Cup.

His latest international outing, however, ended in criticism after the Netherlands fell 2-0 behind against Greece on Thursday before eventually rescuing a 2-2 draw.

Driessen questions Timber’s role for Netherlands

Timber was substituted at half-time as new Netherlands boss Xavi Hernandez looked to change things in midfield.

Driessen believes the Palace midfielder’s constant movement is actually creating problems for the Dutch side, particularly when he moves without a clear plan.

“Xavi says: ‘Attack the spaces.’ So wherever there is space, that is where [Guus] Til goes,” Driessen said on the Kick Off podcast.

“So he is gone.

“And Timber is running around that midfield a bit like a headless chicken.

“He just runs everywhere.

“Whether right or wrong. Then you are really letting the rest of your midfield down.”

This is not the first time Driessen has criticised Timber during the current international break. Following the draw with Germany, he described the Palace midfielder as the “worst Dutchman” on the pitch, as covered in our previous report.

Timber was also taken off before the hour mark against Germany back then.

The Netherlands now have one more match during the international break, with Serbia their next opponents on Sunday. It remains to be seen whether Xavi will trust Quinten Timber with another start.
