Crystal Palace midfielder Quinten Timber has come under criticism from Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen following the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Germany.
Timber joined Crystal Palace from Marseille during the summer transfer window, signing a contract that will keep him in south London until 2031. The 25-year-old has made a strong start to life at Palace, starting their first three matches in the Premier League while also featuring in their Europa League and EFL Cup campaigns.
However, his latest international outing attracted criticism after he started in midfield alongside Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Driessen questions Timber’s performance
Timber was taken off just before the hour mark as the Netherlands settled for a 1-1 draw against Germany.
Driessen was far from impressed with the Palace midfielder and placed him at the bottom of his assessment of the Dutch players. While acknowledging Timber’s ability to bring energy to the team, he questioned how effectively he uses it.
Speaking on De Telegraaf’s Kick-off podcast via Voetbal Primeur, Driessen said: “Timber was certainly the worst Dutchman.
“He can bring energy, but it has to be good energy…
“It all goes so terribly slowly.
“That build-up too, it’s so slow, and that is just something that is inherent to that team.
“They all play it safe.”
The Netherlands still have three more matches to play, including two meetings with Serbia and an away trip to Greece.
