Pierre Sage job safe at Crystal Palace despite performance questions

Crystal Palace have started to find their feet under Pierre Sage, yet questions about the manager’s future continue to surface.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown cannot understand why there is still so much speculation, particularly with the Eagles picking up results in recent weeks.

Palace’s 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest was another step forward, even if the performance itself wasn’t always convincing. They fell behind before fighting back to take all three points.

Crystal Palace have now lost just once in their last six matches across all competitions since beating Fulham for their first win of the season.

Brown backs Pierre Sage to continue Palace progress

Brown believes the recent results should put the focus firmly on what Sage is building rather than whether his position is under threat.

“I do find it a bit bizarre that Pierre Sage keeps being brought up in these types of conversations,” Brown told Football Insider.

He pointed to Palace’s ability to win even when they aren’t at their best, arguing that finding a way through difficult games is an encouraging sign.

“They might have struggled in that game, but if you can score three goals and come from behind to win 3-1 when you’re playing badly, then that’s not a bad thing at all.

“Everybody would like to be performing at their top level in every game, but if you can’t do that and you can still find a way to win, that has got to be taken as a positive.”

Pierre Sage arrived to lead Palace into a new era following Oliver Glasner’s departure after a successful spell.

Brown feels it was always going to take time for the team to adjust, making the early talk of a possible dismissal difficult to understand.

“It doesn’t make sense to me that they would bring him in as their top managerial target, and then sack him after five or six games.”

Palace face a demanding run of fixtures against Lyon, Brighton, Besiktas and Newcastle, giving Sage little time to dwell on the Nottingham win.

Brown believes the recent improvement should give everyone around the club more confidence about what comes next.

“Now that their results have taken a positive turn, I think they’ll all be looking towards the future with more of a positive outlook and they’ll be hopeful this can continue.”
