Transfer View: Our Loss is Palace’s Gain

Yesterday, Crystal Palace completed the signing of Jordon Mutch on a four-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee after spending just six months at Queens Park Rangers after joining from Cardiff in the summer transfer window.

Mutch was overlooked by Harry Redknapp during his time at the West London club, making nine appearances including once in the League and FA Cup, leaving the midfielder unable to play for the club in their current FA Cup campaign with the Eagles’ next game being against either Liverpool or Bolton.

The move created great confusion among QPR fans with many admitting that the club have made a strange decision by letting him go, we spoke to Warren Dell, a regular contributor to the Metro and also the editor of West London Is R’s – a Queens Park Rangers blog.

“Palace have potentially got a great player on their hands and I can only feel we’ve made a mistake in selling him, especially to a rival and especially as we’re bound to go out and sign another washed up mercenary with the fee,” he said.

“It’s unsure who instigated the move but it appears to be we’ve written off a player way too quickly and it’s not gone down well, rightly so. Palace have got a player who was one of the few bright lights in Cardiff’s relegation last season and it’s no mean feat to score 5 goals from midfield in a struggling side. He’s two footed, creative and with an eye for a goal.

“We were impressed with his signing but didn’t get to see too much of what he could do with injury limiting his appearances. He struggled to make an impression but such is the nature of Harry Redknapp he was quickly tossed aside. A run of games is what he needed to show why he was signed in the first place but he’s been quickly discarded.

“QPR should be developing players like Mutch who could be a mainstay in the side for years to come but instead we’ve let him go in favour of searching for a ‘name’ who will no doubt turn out to be an expensive mistake. Under Alan Pardew’s coaching set up I’ve no doubt Mutch will thrive and we’ll look back at the end of the season as this being a big mistake. Our loss is Palace’s gain.”

Jordon Mutch was Alan Pardew’s second signing at Selhurst Park after Yaya Sanogo joined the club on loan earlier on in the month, the midfielder could feature during Saturday’s game against Everton – another chance for Crystal Palace to climb up the table and move away from the relegation zone.
