Crystal Palace’s squad the 23rd most costly in the world

The Football Observatory have compiled a list of the most expensive squads in the world, and Crystal Palace rank surprisingly highly.

They note that the current Manchester United squad was purchased for a mammoth €719m, making it the most expensive squad ever assembled in the history of football – largely boosted by the world-record €110m transfer of Paul Pogba from Juventus in the summer.

While Pogba is worth more than two-thirds of Crystal Palace’s entire squad, Alan Pardew’s group of players is the 23rd most expensive squad in the world – ahead of the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke, as well as Premier League champions Leicester City and Europa League holders Sevilla.

The Football Observatory state that Crystal Palace have spent €151m putting their squad together which is the tenth-most of any Premier League side.

That fee would’ve largely been inflated by Palace’s £30m summer swoop for club-record signing Christian Benteke from Liverpool who’s hit the ground running after his move, scoring in three of his last four Premier League appearances.
