Having come into the game on the back of five successive home league defeats, a win was imperative for the Eagles and they produced that with a win and a dominant performance.
Patrick van Aanholt scored his first goal for the Eagles and that proved the difference between Palace and Middlesbrough at Selhurst park as Sam Allardyce tasted his first win at home as Eagles boss.
Palace had chances throughout with Benteke having most of them, but the left-back’s precise shot on 34 minutes clinched the big three points for Allardyce’s men in the relegation battle.
The win proved vital as it moved Palace level on points with their opponents Middlesbrough in the Premier League table and with other teams losing it meant Palace were crucially out of the bottom three.
