Palace could have signed Virgil van Dijk for £6m

As Virgil van Dijk edges closer to a world-record £75 million move to Liverpool, former Eagles boss Neil Warnock has revealed Crystal Palace came close to signing the defender.

The Daily Star reports that Palace could have snapped up the Dutch defender during Warnock’s time at the club for as little as £6 million.

Warnock, now in charge of Cardiff City, claims he wanted to sign the defender whilst he was playing at Celtic, but the club’s chief scout didn’t believe van Dijk would cope with the speed and demands of the Premier League.

I suggested we buy him for £6m at the time and the chief scout said he wasn’t quick enough and didn’t see him stepping up [from the Scottish league] to the level we were looking for. I hope he’s watching this morning that chief scout, £75m!

After months of speculation, Liverpool finally look set to get their man after agreeing a £75 million deal for the player.
