Townsend praises Rose for battling racism

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has praised Tottenham Hotspur left-back Danny Rose for speaking out about racism, as reported on Reuters.

Rose was racially abused whilst playing England against Montenegro and the full-back has since claimed that he can’t wait to turn away from football because of the amount of racial abuse.

Townsend has hailed Rose’s bravery and said:

Danny’s a very brave man for coming out, being so honest and speaking the truth. Obviously, I sympathise with him; we all support him.

Luckily, so far, I haven’t experienced racism but I know Danny has on more than one occasion. He’s experienced it with the England Under-21s and the seniors in Montenegro the other day.

We need more players like Danny to come out, be honest and speak the truth, to say what they really feel. Danny’s an incredible person; hopefully, the system can help Danny and he can enjoy his football again.

Various players and pundits have called for the authorities to hand out more severe punishments for racial abuse and organisations like Kick It Out have given their full support to all players.
