Crystal Palace: Fabrizio Romano update on Oliver Glasner potential sack

There is a growing possibility that Oliver Glasner will be sacked by Crystal Palace before his contract expires in June. In fact, Fabrizio Romano suggests the Austrian could be headed for the exit door before this Sunday’s clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Glasner’s future is in serious doubt following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar last night. His side took the lead through Ismaila Sarr, but poor defending allowed Karlo Abramovic to equalise.

The 51-year-old confirmed last month that he intended to leave when his deal is up at the end of the season. He oversaw the club’s first-ever major trophy success when they claimed the FA Cup last year.

Glasner future update

Fans have started to turn on Glasner amid a run of just one win in 16 games across competitions. His side sits 13th ahead of the encounter with Wolves at Selhurst Park this Sunday.

Romano gave an update on the situation and revealed that talks are underway regarding the manager’s future. He wrote on X:

“Oliver Glasner and Crystal Palace board, in direct discussions today about the manager’s immediate future. Glasner will leave in June but exit could be anticipated and happen shortly if (Crystal Palace) accept to proceed.”

Glasner has been in charge of the Eagles since February 2024, when he replaced Roy Hodgson. He’s won 44 of 101 games during his time at Selhurst Park.

The Austrian’s confirmation of his decision to leave this summer came amid the departure of star players. Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal for £67.5 million before Marc Guehi headed to Manchester City in a £20 million deal.

Some supporters sympathised with Palace’s coach and his frustration over the club’s recruitment. It didn’t feel as though he was properly backed despite taking the South Londoners to FA Cup glory and European football for the first time in their history.

Disastrous performances and a lack of form have seen a shift in relations between Glasner and the fans. Last night in Bosnia, the travelling support were heard chanting “we want Glasner out” and “you’re getting sacked in the morning.”

“Never know” – Glasner on his future

Steve Parish and his fellow higher-ups discussed Glasner’s future last month. They considered parting ways due to his public criticism of their transfer strategy.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss stayed on, and the two parties agreed that it was best for him to see out his contract. That has failed to turn the tide for his team, who have faltered this season and capitulated in a 3-2 loss to Burnley last weekend.

Glasner was asked about his future ahead of the game against Wolves on Sunday. He took the blame for poor performances and admitted he’s “not been good enough” to replace the players sold.

The Austrian also claimed he wasn’t good enough at dealing with the schedule of playing mid-week European football. He added (via Sky Sports):

“Let’s see. What the future brings, we never know.”

Should Glasner be sacked he will leave the club as the most successful manager in history. He led the Eagles to the FA Cup and the Community Shield last year.

Palace’s board have likely already been conducting their search for a replacement ahead of this summer. They might need to move faster if they do indeed cut ties with Glasner before his contract runs out.
