Crystal Palace: Uche stay in doubt as Getafe pay the price of dissapointing loan

Christantus Uche called his move to Crystal Palace “unbelievable” when he arrived from La Liga club Getafe on deadline day last summer. The Nigerian forward was tipped for a bright future and Steve Parish branded him an “exciting young talent.”

Parish also told club media that the Eagles were “excited to see him thrive in South London.” Unfortunately, he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, failing to secure a starting berth in Oliver Glasner’s side.

The 22-year-old has started just three games across competitions, and none of them has occurred in the Premier League. A bit-part role has been frustrating for the loanee, and his limited opportunities have come with consequences.

Crystal Palace have Uche decision to make

Uche started on the bench in a 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night. He came on with nine minutes left, and this has been a recurring theme for the Nigerian during his spell with Palace.

Glasner’s decision not to start Uche against Spurs has ruled out a clause that triggers a permanent transfer. He needed to make 10 starts for the club, and this is no longer possible.

This won’t only be a setback for the three-cap Nigeria international if he were to wish to remain at Selhurst Park. His parent club, Getafe, were relying on the player’s sale to meet financial constraints.

La Liga reduced the Spanish outfit’s budget by €16 million (£13.9m). This came about because Uche wasn’t being sold permanently but rather loaned with conditions, per La Liga & Beyond.

This puts Getafe under pressure to try and sell the attacker this summer, and interested clubs know the Spaniards’ desperate situation. He has a short period to try and convince Palace to sign him permanently, although this will come under Glasner, who won’t be in charge come next season.

Do Palace fans want Uche?

Uche’s best displays have come in the Europa Conference League, scoring two goals in four games. He was on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win over Shelbourne and a 2-2 draw against Kuopion Palloseura.

With the news surfacing regarding the Getafe loanee’s clause no longer being active, some Palace fans have given their verdicts on a possible permanent transfer. While many sympathise with the player, there are reservations.

One fan wrote:

“No… I haven’t seen enough of him to make his Palace tenure permanent!! He’s too weak for the EPL and we’ve had enough of those players over the years.”

Another added:

“Like the guy and gives it his all but the quality has been only shown in flashes. Blew his big chance at Macclesfield. If the price is reduced then worth a punt as a squad player.”

One replied:

“No – seems like a nice lad but not good enough. Would much rather some academy talent gets a chance.”

There are some members of the Selhurst Park faithful who feel he’s worth signing for a reasonable price. One supporter argued that he hasn’t been given enough opportunities:

“He’s not been give much of a chance to be honest. If JP is going in summer it wouldn’t be a bad idea to hold on to him but he needs to get more games. We can rate him and right him off on a few games and a few cameos, especially when the teams been under performing.”

Another fan added:

“Yes! He is a talent worth developing. If Glasner’s replacement has the right approach to potential he could turn out to be a star. If we let him go his rise is inevitable.”

One suggested a plan for the Nigerian:

“For £12m yes, then loan to French league or Bundesliga for a year.”

Palace might be in the market for a new forward this summer amid the likelihood of Jean-Philippe Mateta departing. They have been linked with Derby County’s Patrick Agyemang, who could cost around £20m.
