Jefferson Lerma’s contract is set to expire this summer, but Crystal Palace hold an option to extend the deal by one year. The Colombian joined the club in the summer of 2023 after leaving AFC Bournemouth, where he’d spent five years.
The Athletic reports that the higher-ups are “likely to trigger” the one-year option in Lerma’s contract. That makes sense given Adam Wharton is linked with a move away, and Daichi Kamada is already departing when his deal is up in June.
Lerma’s time at Palace has been incredibly successful. Aside from lifting two trophies and qualifying for European football, he has played 110 times over three seasons in South London. He has been incredibly consistent throughout his spell at the club.
Palace’s Consistent Colombian
Lerma’s versatility has seen him feature under every manager and across a range of positions. In his early days at the club, he played consistently in midfield, but over time he has shown he can step in at central defence and perform at a strong level.
Most notably, his cameo in the FA Cup final, where he played over 40 minutes, replacing the injured Marc Guéhi. A truly reliable professional, Lerma’s longevity in the Premier League and his consistency in featuring for his nation demonstrate that he is some way from slowing down.
Whilst there is no suggestion that a final decision has been made, it would make sense for Palace to extend Lerma’s deal. He is still a valuable member of the squad and is potentially on track to play more games this season than he ever has before for the club.
Lerma’s Career to date
His appearances have been more limited this season, with most coming as a bench cameo; however, Lerma has had his most successful campaign in terms of goal contributions. In fact, his four assists are better than in any other season of his professional career, which now spans 10 years since his debut for Levante UD in 2015.
Lerma signed for Bournemouth when they won promotion to the Premier League in 2018, and stayed with the club for two seasons in the second division between 2020 and 2022. Upon Bournemouth’s second return to the top flight, in the final year of his contract, Lerma continued to impress.
The South Coast club would have been hoping to extend his stay; Lerma had become a true club legend for the Cherries, but interest from Palace was enough to tempt him.
A natural leader and a key figure of the current squad, Palace fans will hope that both player and club agree that continuing Lerma’s spell at the club is the best option.
Triggering the extension option would not only mean that Palace keep a valuable member of the squad, but would also mean there is less pressure to invest in the midfield, which could be an area of focus should Adam Wharton move on in the summer, and even more so if they were to lose Lerma too.
