Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton reportedly expects to be leaving the club when the summer transfer window opens. The young Englishman’s future has been a talking point throughout the season.
Wharton has received interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool. There were reports that the Eagles were concerned that this caused some distraction.
The 22-year-old has three years left on his contract and has been at Selhurst Park since early 2024. If he does depart, he will likely be sold for a club record fee.
Adam Wharton ‘Ready’ To Leave
Wharton ‘believes he is ready to make a move to a Champions League club’, according to The Sun. He has landed on United’s wishlist amid the Red Devils’ need to replace Casemiro.
The former Blackburn Rovers youngster is set to represent England during the ongoing international break. The likes of United, Liverpool and Real Madrid may well be keeping an eye on him and how he performs for Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions.
The English midfielder has appeared 41 times across competitions for Glasner’s side this season, posting seven assists. He will be crucial heading into the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League against Serie A side Fiorentina.
Wharton’s potential departure has long been expected, and as such, the South Londoners should be in the market for a replacement. He’s not the only midfielder headed for the exit door as Daichi Kamada is also set to leave when his contract expires in June.
Geertruida a Possible Replacement
There have already been several names linked with replacing Wharton at Selhurst Park. One of those could be Lutsharel Geertruida who has been catching the eye while on loan at Sunderland this season.
Geertruida is on loan at the Stadium of Light from German outfit RB Leipzig and his performances have garnered interest from several top-flight clubs. TEAMtalk reports that Palace are now eyeing the versatile Dutchman, who can also play at right-back and in midfield.
Liverpool are leading the race for the 25-year-old while Aston Villa, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen. But the Black Cats possess a buy option which is believed to be around £20m.
If Geertruida is available for that price, it’s a no-brainer for Steve Parish’s transfer chiefs. He ticks many boxes, including his versatility, which will help whoever replaces Glasner with depth.
