- Crystal Palace lose to Liverpool
- Daniel Munoz goal causes fury
- Tyrick Mitchell picks up injury
Crystal Palace suffered a 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday which has all but ended their hopes of European qualification via the Premier League. The Eagles fell to defeat during an entertaining battle at Anfield.
All focus is now on ending Oliver Glasner’s reign with a European trophy to add to last season’s FA Cup triumph. His side heads to Poland, where they face Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League semi-final on Thursday.
But fans will be concerned over Tyrick Mitchell ahead of that game as the English wing-back was forced off against Liverpool. He has been vital for the South Londoners this season.
Palace Lose at Anfield
There was to be no fourth win over Liverpool this season as Arne Slot’s men avenged three losses to Palace at Anfield. Alexander Isak opened the scoring before Andy Robertson doubled the lead before half-time.
Daniel Munoz pulled one back with a controversial goal that has caused a stir. But Florian Wirtz ensured the Eagles left Merseyside empty-handed.
The defeat means Palace now sit 13th in the league table, six points behind seventh-placed Bournemouth. If we’re going to have another European campaign next season, it will most likely have to come through winning the Conference League.
Munoz Madness
Munoz’s goal was excellently taken as the Colombian looped the ball over Liverpool defenders and their stand-in goalkeeper, Freddie Woodman. The problem was that the English shot-stopper was initially on the ground after jarring his knee.
The referee didn’t stop play, and the ball fell to Munoz outside of the box, who made the most of the opportunity. While Glasner defended his wing-back, he did admit that discussions were held over letting the hosts score.
The Anfield faithful were furious, including Slot, and one fan even threw the ball at the back of Munoz’s head before a throw-in. There has since been a debate regarding the nature of the goal and whether it should have stood.
Mitchell Concerns
Mitchell came off at half-time, and Glasner confirmed it was due to a recurring injury. It appears the English wing-back has been playing through the pain barrier.
Glasner said after the game:
“He felt his achilles. It’s not just today, it’s an ongoing issue he has. Our medical department is treating it very well. Today he said that he couldn’t continue. Borna did very well – he hasn’t played for many weeks.“
Mitchell recently reached his 200th appearance for Palace, and he has been unbelievably consistent this season. There will now be fears that he might miss the first-leg encounter with Shakhtar, although it seems he’ll be okay.
