Crystal Palace have offered American defender Chris Richards a new contract as they look to extend his stay in South London. The new terms would include a pay rise to recognise Richards’ role in the squad.

The BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella has revealed that the talks around extending Richards’ contract began back in November.

Richards has never signed a new deal since he joined Palace from Bayern Munich back in 2022, and that contract is set to expire at the end of next season.

Not only does the USA international deserve a more lucrative deal, but it will also benefit Palace to tie him down.

Tie him down, Palace!

With the World Cup just over a month away, Richards is set to star for the USA, as one of their four ‘captains’.

His contributions to Oliver Glasner’s side this season have been remarkable, and he has established himself as a strong starting defender in the Premier League.

Whilst the USA are not favourites or tipped for great success at their home tournament, they will undoubtedly have a lot of eyes on them.

Richards will certainly catch the eye of potential suitors, so long as he continues to play how he has all season. He already snubbed Atletico Madrid to join Palace back in his Bayern Munich days, and will certainly have clubs of a similar ilk interested in his services.

Richards has always put himself first, and prioritised playing time ahead of club stature, leaving Bayern and opting for a move to Palace ahead of clubs like Atletico proved where his thoughts were, playing football and developing.

Now he has done that, Palace are in a position where they can extend Richards’ stay and ensure they have a top Premier League level centre back for another few seasons.

Crucial to Palace

Richards has played a remarkable 4,012 minutes this season, reflecting the importance of his ability to Palace.

He became evermore crucial upon the departure of Marc Guéhi, and the simple fact that Palace’s defence hasn’t seen a fall off in quality is a huge credit to Richards, along with Maxence Lacroix and emerging star Jaydee Canvot.

Not only has he played through numerous injuries this season, bandaged and bruised, he of course played a key role in Palace’s FA Cup winning campaign.

His general performance level has increased year on year, and he is now a consistently superb central defender at the top level of the game.

Extending his stay in South London is a no brainer, and the club should do everything in their power to reward Richards for his contributions across the past four years.

matchday.
