Fabrizio Romano confirms Crystal Palace flop set to join Juventus
  • Alexander Sorloth reaches agreement with Juventus
  • Knock-on effect for the Eagles
  • Why it didn’t work out at Crystal Palace

Former Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth looks set to make his next move in the summer transfer window. The 30-year-old had a short stint at Selhurst Park, which was widely regarded as a “flop”.

The Norwegian striker joined Palace in January 2018, playing in the first team for a year before being loaned out to Belgian side Gent and Turkish club Trabzonspor. He officially departed Palace in September 2020 after not playing in Red and Blue for a year-and-a-half.

Since joining RB Leipzig from the Eagles, Sorloth has played his football across Europe, on loan to Real Sociedad before moving permanently to Villarreal and then to Atletico Madrid in August 2024.

His performances this year in the Champions League attracted a lot of attention from Palace fans after scoring 6 goals in 14 games. Many fans were surprised by his performances, given the difficulty of his time at Palace.

Sorloth headed to Juventus

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X that an initial agreement has been reached on personal terms between Juventus and Sørloth’s team. Talks between Atletico Madrid and the Italian side are expected to continue.

The 30-year-old has two years left on his contract since joining Atleti in August 2024. In La Liga this season, the striker has netted 13 goals in 35 matches.

The agreement could have a knock-on effect for Palace, with Jean-Philipe Mateta previously attracting the interest of Juventus for their striker vacancy.

Why Sorloth didn’t work out at Palace

Sorloth struggled at Palace, netting only one goal and making only 20 first-team appearances over the year before subsequent loans. The striker struggled with the Premier League’s physical demands and has not returned to the English top flight since.

During his stint as manager, Roy Hodgson focused on experienced players to prevent Palace from falling into a relegation battle. This saw Sorloth miss out on regular game time to Christian Benteke and be unable to build momentum in such a punishing league.

During his time with the squad, Benteke was Palace’s first-choice striker and in great form. This ultimately led to him falling by the wayside and eventually departing.
