- Crystal Palace announce Jefferson Lerma retained
- Colombian included in 2026-27 Premier League squad
- Eagles in talks with Daichi Kamada
Jefferson Lerma seems to have extended his contract with Crystal Palace ahead of Pierre Sage’s appointment as manager. The Colombian’s previous deal had been set to expire on June 30th.
The club have revealed their retained and released list for the 2026-27 Premier League campaign. It includes Lerma despite a lack of announcement regarding his situation.
Previous reports suggested Lerma had snubbed an extension offer from the club. He was linked with a move to La Liga as a free agent.
Lerma new contract
Palace’s confirmation of their retained list also included Daichi Kamada whose contract was also expiring this summer. The club have confirmed they are in talks with the Japanese midfielder over an extension.
The South London outfit makes no mention of such talks with Lerma, which suggests they have already extended his deal. He has been at Selhurst Park since July 2023, when he arrived on a free transfer after leaving Bournemouth.
Lerma has become a fan favourite with the Eagles, putting in important performances throughout his three-year spell. Roy Hodgson called him “outstanding” after he made his debut in a win over Sheffield United in August 2023.
The 31-year-old wasn’t a regular starter last season. Oliver Glasner used him as a utility man, turning to the Colombian in midfield and central defence.
Lerma made 48 appearances across competitions, providing six assists. He looks set to continue as part of a new era under Sage.
A good decision
Lerma might not be a marquee player in the Palace squad, but he is undeniably important. His versatility can help address injury crises, as was the case during the winter period.
The experienced Colombian is also a positive character who puts the team first. This is the right type of personality that Sage will want in the dressing room.
The Eagles won’t want to lose players who contributed to their most successful period under Glasner. The transition needs to be as stress-free as possible, and that includes keeping the likes of Lerma.
