Pierre Sage has inherited an immediate Crystal Palace academy decision as Jemiah Umolu and Mofe Jemide weigh up their futures.
Standard Sport reports that striker Umolu is expected to leave Palace on a permanent deal this summer after struggling to find a first-team route since arriving from West Ham in 2024.
The same report states that England Under-20 defender Jemide is also assessing his options, with PSV, Alaves and Celta Vigo credited with interest in either a loan or permanent move.
Sage Must Balance Pathways And Squad Depth
Sage’s appointment has been framed as a continuity play after Oliver Glasner’s trophy-laden exit, with The Guardian reporting that Palace plan to back the Frenchman in the market.
But this is also a pathway test. Umolu scored four times in 10 Premier League 2 matches last season, while Jemide remains highly rated despite not yet making his senior Palace debut.
For a club now managing domestic demands and European football, losing two academy players before Sage has properly assessed them would be awkward timing. The counterpoint is clear: both players need senior minutes, and Palace cannot sell a development story unless there is a believable route into the squad.
Read Crystal Palace has already looked at how Palace’s Europa League calendar gives Sage a brutal first test, and that context matters here. A heavier schedule should create more minutes, but only if the new manager trusts the next layer of the squad.
The next few weeks should show whether Sage wants one last pre-season look before the club sanction exits. If not, Umolu and Jemide could become early reminders that academy status only matters when opportunity follows.
