Crystal Palace have reached the useful part of a transfer saga: the point where doing nothing can still be a strong position.
Yahoo Sports, relaying Football Insider, reports that Palace are growing increasingly confident of keeping Adam Wharton as Liverpool’s interest cools. Football Insider has also reported that Palace are reluctant to lose the midfielder and hope he stays for at least one more season.
That combination gives Palace control. If Liverpool are not ready to move strongly, there is no reason for Palace to soften their stance.
Wharton Valuation Is About Scarcity
Wharton’s value is not built only on passing range or control from deep midfield. It is also built on scarcity.
Premier League clubs pay heavily for midfielders who can receive under pressure, protect the ball and move play forward quickly. Wharton does those things naturally. He also does them at 22, with England pedigree and clear room to improve.
Crystal Palace confirmed his arrival from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024 on a five-and-a-half-year deal. That contract gives Palace a strong base.
They are not dealing with an expiring deal, a player they need to move, or a wage-heavy asset. They can price Wharton against his importance to Pierre Sage, the difficulty of replacing him and the message any sale would send.
That is why the fee should work as a deterrent as much as a valuation.
Liverpool Cooling Interest Helps Palace
Liverpool’s reported shift away from Wharton does not weaken Palace’s hand. It removes the most obvious pressure point.
If a buying club does not attack the deal properly, Palace can hold their position. They do not need to invite soft structures or player-exchange talks just to keep the story moving.
The market also supports patience. Midfielders with Premier League experience continue to command major fees. Palace should treat that as protection, not pressure.
For Sage, the football impact is clear. Wharton gives Palace a rare platform player. He can receive in the first phase, disguise forward passes and help the team stay calm under pressure.
Losing that profile before Sage has built his midfield would carry a major sporting cost.
Read Crystal Palace has already covered Liverpool’s earlier Wharton interest. The latest update changes the tone. Palace now have time on their side.
Keeping Wharton would also send a clear message. After FA Cup success, European football and a managerial change, Palace can show they are protecting the core of the squad rather than simply preparing for departures.
The risk remains that Liverpool, or another major club, return with a stronger offer. Palace’s stance should still be simple: no discount, no rush and no deal unless the fee reflects Wharton’s true value.
