Crystal Palace are expected to return with an improved offer after Augsburg rejected their opening €20million bid for Chrislain Matsima.
A move taking Chrislain Matsima to Crystal Palace remains possible because the defender has already reached a verbal agreement with the Eagles.
Get German Football News reports that Augsburg want a higher fee for the 24-year-old. Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg expects Palace to submit another proposal as they work to replace Maxence Lacroix.
Chrislain Matsima to Crystal Palace hinges on improved bid
Matsima initially joined Augsburg on loan from Monaco before completing a permanent move in January 2025. He has since established himself in the Bundesliga, making 48 league appearances across two seasons.
The defender stands at 1.93 metres and has experience in both a back four and a three-man defence. His pace, physical strength and composure in possession would give Pierre Sage a natural option on the right side of Palace’s back line.
ReadCrystalPalace reported earlier on Friday that Palace were preparing for Lacroix’s departure after Chelsea advanced a £52million transfer. Matsima was identified as the leading candidate to replace the France international, with Chibuike Nwaiwu also under consideration.
Palace’s agreement with Matsima gives them a useful starting point, but Augsburg retain control of negotiations. The centre-back is under contract until 2029, leaving the German club under no immediate pressure to sell.
Augsburg signed Matsima for around €5million and can now make a substantial profit. His reported willingness to join Palace should help negotiations, although the clubs remain apart over the fee.
Chrislain Matsima to Crystal Palace now depends on whether the Eagles improve their offer. With Lacroix’s move advancing, Palace will want a quick resolution before the new season.
