Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage outlined his vision for the Eagles during his Thursday press conference on the eve of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign. Speaking directly about building the right conditions for talent to flourish, the Frenchman offered fascinating updates on Matheus França and Cheick Doucouré heading into Saturday’s opener.
França’s Fresh Start: Adapting to European Football
After a bright pre-season campaign where he netted four goals more than any other Palace player Matheus França looks poised to carve out a real role in Sage’s side. The Brazilian spent time on loan back in his homeland last year after struggling to adapt initially, but Sage was quick to acknowledge his raw talent and high ceiling.
“He had a good pre-season with four goals. It was difficult for him as he began here, that’s why he went on loan to Brazil last year. He has to adapt to European football because it’s really different to South American football. He’s shown really good things and we will see what we will do with him. We have to build the best context for him to improve because he’s young but he has talent.”
Doucouré Back in the Fold: A Crucial Option for Palace
The most encouraging update came regarding Cheick Doucouré. The Malian midfielder has endured a nightmare period with injuries stretching back to November 2023, when he suffered a devastating Achilles rupture, restricting him to just 521 minutes of competitive football since. Despite that long road to recovery, Sage revealed that the 26-year-old is now fit enough to feature from the start.
“He’s able to start. He didn’t play much during the last two seasons so we have to consider him within this situation. He needs time to come back and we will take our time to let him in a good context, particularly on the psychological side. When you play, you have to be confident, understand this moment is only a step and in a few moments you will be the player you were two years ago. That’s why we will take our time with him. He understands that. He walks a lot around the session but he’s really happy to be on the pitch and we are happy to see him on the pitch because he’s an incredible player.”
What It Means for the Eagles
While Palace continue to search the transfer market for central midfield reinforcements before the deadline—with ongoing talks for Kevin Danois and an active bid for Lamine Camara a fully fit Doucouré changes the equation entirely. Before his injury, the 2022/23 Player of the Season was one of the top engine-room operators in the top flight, attracting interest worth £50m from Liverpool.
Although Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada are expected to shoulder heavy workloads in the starting XI, having Doucouré back handling rotational minutes gives Sage quality depth. If the coaching staff can manage his recovery properly, his return will feel like a massive addition to the squad without spending a penny.
