Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future with Crystal Palace has been in doubt for some time. Standard Sport reported this week that the striker had taken the club to court to challenge the validity of a one-year contract extension activated by the Eagles in 2024. Reports over the weekend added that Mateta argued the remainder of his deal due to expire in June 2027 was invalid.
However, that attempt fell at the hands of FIFA and a Premier League independent tribunal, the latter initiated by Crystal Palace itself. The tribunal subsequently ruled that he is bound to honour his contract.
The legal dispute follows a turbulent period for the Frenchman, who came close to signing with AC Milan in January before the move fell through due to a failed medical from a pre-existing knee injury. Meanwhile, Aston Villa have seen a bid for his services rejected this week.
Managerial Support Ahead of City Clash
Despite the off-field drama, Pierre Sage addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Manchester City on Friday night. The Frenchman was asked about Mateta following BBC Sport’s claims regarding the contract dispute, but the Palace boss insisted he does not expect Mateta or Ismaila Sarr to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.
Mateta got the nod to start Palace’s Premier League opener away at Everton, playing just over an hour of the 2-0 defeat. Sage insists the player remains fully committed to south London, rightly pointing out he has not downed tools.
Sage Stands by His Striker
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sage admitted he believes Mateta will remain at Selhurst Park despite the recent links to Aston Villa, praising the forward’s daily attitude.
“I speak with him every day and, in front of me, I have a guy that is funny, happy to be here. He gives his best in every session. I didn’t see a player who has a problem with the club or with us, that’s why he played the last game as a starter.
“You imagine if we had a problem with him, he would not play as a starter. Now it is just a problem that will be resolved. It is maybe (the problem) with the man but not with the player, if you want.
“I think he (Mateta) will stay and, like I told you, he has the behaviour of someone who is happy to be here, who wants to be here and prepared to be here all season. I have no doubt about that.
“He prefers football to his contract. When you love to play, you play. The guy is wonderful.
“The player only trained for two weeks so he’s not perfect. If he was perfect, he would play every game and score 10 goals but that’s not the case for anybody.”
Despite the friction behind closed doors and ongoing interest from rival clubs before the transfer deadline, Crystal Palace’s stance remains clear. By securing a favorable ruling from the tribunal and maintaining the full backing of Pierre Sage, the Eagles are relying on Mateta’s professionalism to keep his focus squarely on the pitch.
Whether the unresolved personal disputes linger long-term remains to be seen, but for now, Palace will count on their main forward to deliver on matchdays as they navigate a challenging Premier League campaign.
