Crystal Palace 0-7 Tottenham: Red Card Costs Eagles in WSL Heavy Defeat

Palace Left Bruised After Seven-Goal Spurs Storm

Clinical finishing and a punishing numerical disadvantage combined to inflict a heavy defeat on Crystal Palace Women.Tottenham Hotspur ran out 7-0 winners in the Barclays Women’s Super League at SE25.

Jo Potter named an unchanged starting line-up following last week’s impressive draw at the Emirates.

The Eagles actually began the contest with real intent; furthermore, Bethany England signaled early attacking ambition in the fifth minute when she flashed a sharp snapshot narrowly over the crossbar, thereby briefly setting pulses racing in South London.

Early Red Card Alters the Landscape

The entire complexion of the match shifted dramatically inside the opening ten minutes. Fuka Tsunoda lunged into a heavy challenge on Tottenham’s Cathinka Tandberg in the seventh minute.

The referee had no hesitation thus brandishing a straight red card, consequently leaving Palace fighting a monumental uphill battle with ten players for the vast majority of the fixture.

Despite losing a player so early, Potter’s disciplined side dug deep and showed immense defensive resilience before the interval. Goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin produced a stellar display between the posts to keep the visitors at bay. Her standout moment arrived in the 38th minute when she brilliantly tipped Amanda Nildén’s fierce strike onto the crossbar. Strong blocks across the backline preserved a hard-earned goalless stalemate at half-time, offering hope to the home faithful.

Holdt Takes Center Stage After the Break

Unfortunately, the sheer physical toll of playing with ten players caught up with the Eagles after the restart. Tottenham finally broke the deadlock in the 49th minute when Olivia Holdt fired past Peyraud-Magnin.

Subsequently, Holdt soon seized complete control of the contest, doubling Spurs’ advantage with a fantastic finish in the 62nd minute before eventually completing a clinical hat-trick from distance in the 74th minute. As a result, the floodgates opened while fatigue set in across the pitch. Shortly after, Victoria Pelova added a fourth just two minutes later, meanwhile substitute Shekeira Martinez capitalised on a rebound in the 79th minute following a smart initial save by Peyraud-Magnin.

Amanda Nildén bundled home from close range in the 86th minute, and Pelova rounded off the comprehensive victory with her second of the afternoon in the 90th minute, leaving Palace empty-handed.

Instant Reaction and Looking Ahead

While the scoreline reads harshly for the Eagles, the defensive shift put in during the first forty-five minutes showcased admirable grit.

Fortunately, Palace will not have to dwell on the disappointment for long. Indeed, Potter’s squad returns to action in just three days, subsequently making the short trip to face Watford in the Subway Player’s Cup League Phase on Wednesday, 23rd September. Ultimately, kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 BST at the Borough Sports Ground as the team looks to bounce back immediately.
