Kristian Kjær Reveals True Character of Crystal Palace Winger Dario Osorio

Crystal Palace pulled off one of the standout coups of the summer transfer window by securing the services of Dario Osorio from FC Midtjylland. Indeed, the Eagles splashed a record-breaking €28m to bring the talented Chilean attacker to Selhurst Park, making him the most expensive transfer in Danish Superliga history.

Midtjylland enjoyed a stellar window overall, earning an incredible €86m from player sales and firmly establishing themselves as the premier selling club in Denmark.

Prior to completing his high-profile move to South London, Osorio already made a massive impact for his former club. He made 11 appearances across all competitions earlier in the season, directly contributing to five goals. Furthermore, since arriving in Denmark back in 2023, the winger proved a consistent attacking force, registering ten goal contributions in the Superliga during the 2025/26 campaign.

Beating Elite European Competition Through Data

According to Midtjylland technical director Kristian Kjær, Osorio’s immense potential was never a secret, even dating back to his formative years with Club Universidad De Chile. In fact, the youngster attracted strong interest from across the continent long before his move to Scandinavia.

Reflecting on the player’s early tracking, Kjær told Sport Witness:

“He was never a hidden gem in Chile. He was spotted almost immediately. We have known him for quite a long time. He’s always been rumoured with big clubs like Leipzig, AC Milan and other football clubs playing in bigger leagues than ours.”

Despite facing fierce competition from heavyweight European outfits, Midtjylland utilised an advanced, data-driven recruitment strategy to win the race for his signature. Kjær explained:

“But we tracked him through data before we signed him, and then in the summer of 2023, we found out that we had an opportunity to actually sign him on a permanent transfer, and we triggered that possibility, which we were of course delighted about back then and still are today.”

Seamless Adaptation and Growing Confidence

Moving from South America to Scandinavia naturally presented a major lifestyle shift. However, Kjær revealed that Osorio handled the transition with remarkable maturity, despite facing immediate physical and tactical hurdles.

“When he left Chile on 31st August 2023, he especially needed to adapt to a more tactical, intense and aggressive league,” Kjær noted. “Including adapting to Danish football’s defensive demands, which he himself flagged as the biggest adjustment, I believe. Then, of course, there was also living and playing football in a more organised professional league than the Chilean one, with a focus on nutrition, off-pitch behaviour, and being a top athlete outside the pitch as well.”

Beyond his athletic development, Osorio’s personal character evolved significantly during his time in Denmark. Although he remains naturally reserved, the winger developed a quiet self-assurance.

Kjær observed: “I think Dario said it himself that he moved away from home when he was 11 years old, and that made him maybe a quiet and introverted boy. And today he’s not quite as introverted. I see him as a totally grounded, consistent, settled top professional, smiling and private, but more in a settled, grounded manner.”

Osorio even forged a surprising bond with fellow teammate Franculino Djú who also secured a historic move to Trabzonspor this summer despite initially facing a language barrier. Kjær smiled, recalling:

“And it was fun to see here that at Midtjylland, Franculino Djú, who we also sold this summer for a historic amount to Trabzonspor and who arrived at the same time and at the same age, became best friends with Darío and started talking with each other on the pitch, even when Osorio understood nothing.”

Unselfish Work Ethic Tailored for the Premier League

From a tactical standpoint, Midtjylland harbor zero doubts that Osorio will thrive in English football. Crucially, his exceptional defensive work rate and unselfish team-first mentality set him apart from traditional wingers.

Highlighting these attributes, Kjær stated:

“Then, from a character point of view, I would say he consistently puts the team above his own numbers. That’s also demonstrated by his defensive work rate. Again, he works very hard in favour of the club. And also, in his farewell, he thanked the coach, the medical staff and the coaching staff before anyone else. That shows a lot about his character, I believe.”

Looking ahead to what Crystal Palace fans can expect on the pitch, Kjær pointed to the winger’s explosive physical and technical traits:

“I would say the defensive work rate [is something to watch out for]. But from an offensive mindset, it’s how fast he is with the ball. He can go left of the direct opponent, he can go right. And then, of course, his shooting. His strengths are his long-range shooting, finishing technique and crossing with his very precise left foot. And then his high top-end speed and pressing abilities are also what make him very interesting. And then his character will fit the Premier League extremely well too.”

Having already earned over 20 caps for the Chilean national team, Osorio possesses all the necessary tools to scale even greater heights once he fully adapts to the demands of the Premier League at Selhurst Park.
