Crystal Palace Player Ratings: Liverpool (H)

After years of inflicting pain on Liverpool, the tables were turned on Crystal Palace after a dubious penalty given in stoppage time meant that Jurgen Klopp’s men left Selhurst Park with all three points.

Palace went ahead early in the second half thanks to a Joe Ledley strike and when Liverpool’s vice-captain James Milner was sent off, it looked like the Eagles would once again be the ones to rain on Liverpool’s parade.

However, an unfortunate slip by Alex McCarthy as he was trying to send a long kick upfield presented the ball to Roberto Firmino and the Brazilian equalised for Liverpool.

Both sides pushed for a winner and deep into stoppage time, Christian Benteke got the ball on the left side of the Palace penalty area. Damien Delaney thought about making a tackle but tried to pull away, despite going to ground. His knee did catch Benteke’s foot and the Belgian fell to the ground, somewhat dramatically.

The referee did not originally give a penalty, but his assistant did. Benteke calmly slotted the spot kick and Palace ended up without a single point as the visitors claimed a 2-1 win.
