Alleged eagle puncher appears in court

The man who allegedly punched Kayla, the bald eagle, appeared in court today.

Daniel Boylett, 35, allegedly committed the offence against the bird of prey, named Kayla, during the crowd trouble in the match between the Addicks and Crystal Palace last year. Police believe the trouble at the game was pre-arranged but tempers weren’t helped after Charlton fell to a disappointing 4-1 defeat at Selhurst Park.

And after being charged with violent disorder and criminal damage of the eagle, Boylett appeared in Croydon Magistrates Court today. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of violent disorder but did not put in a plea for the charge of criminal damage. Colin Kitto, 48, and Andy McConville, 47, were also charged with violent disorder and both plead not guilty.

As noted by the Daily Mail, the prosecution Jacqui Hughes said: “On the day of the allegations Charlton Athletic supporters arranged to meet with Crystal Palace supporters before a match to have a fight.”

“Police prevented such a clash but there was fighting inside the stadium.”

“Mr Boylett was seen shouting at rival fans and dancing on CCTV evidence, another man threw a bottle and was seen swinging punches.”

“Therefore the Crown say this is not suitable to be dealt with at this court.”

The defence for Boylett Danielle Burns said: “He denies any involvement, his conduct spans a whole day and he says he was not part of what is alleged.”

District Judge Rana deemed the case too important to be dealt with at Magistrates Court and will now be heard at Croydon Crown Court next month.

matchday.
