Crystal Palace defender Mamadou Sakho has revealed that he is proud after being recalled to the France squad, according to a report on Football London.
The Frenchman revealed that it is the highest honour for a French footballer to represent the national side.
Sakho has been absent from the international scene since 2016 but after making his move to Palace permanent, he has got his career back on track.
The centre-back was frozen out by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp but he made the move to Selhurst Park and has firmly concentrated on his performances ever since.
His efforts have been rewarded by Didier Deschamps and Sakho could not contain his happiness. He said:
I’m proud. It’s always nice to meet the teammates, to find the blue jersey.
This jersey is the grail. After that, I’m someone who, when he focuses on something, wants the maximum of course.
In football, the highest peak for a French player is to wear this blue jersey. To defend the colours of his nation is extraordinary. It’s always fun and we are always motivated to do this.
France face Iceland in an international friendly first, before playing against Germany in the UEFA Nations League, with Sakho hoping to feature in both fixtures.
