- Crystal Palace eyeing Joao Gomes
- Club have contacted his agency
- Atletico Madrid frontrunners
Crystal Palace have reportedly been in contact with Joao Gomes’ representatives as they plot to bring the midfielder to Selhurst Park. The Brazilian is expected to leave Molineux this summer following their relegation to the EFL Championship.
Gomes is one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated midfield talents and he has been a bright spark in a dissapointing season for Wolves. The 25-year-old has appeared 38 times across competitions, registering one goal and three assists.
Palace are set to strengthen their midfield this summer ahead of Daichi Kamada’s departure. The Japanese midfielder is leaving when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Going For Gomes
Nizaar Kinsella of BBC Sport reports that Palace have “expressed an interest” in Gomes. The club have held “early contact” with the player’s agency and Wolves are believed to be demanding £40m.
Atletico Madrid have been pursuing the Brazilian international, and the La Liga giants have also made their interest known. At this stage, it looks as though Diego Simeone’s side are favourites to land the player.
That said, Atleti are also eyeing Atalanta’s Ederson and if they were to sign Gomes’ Brazilian compatriot, that could pave the way for the Eagles to seal a deal. He has four years left on his contract at Molineux, where he has been a key man in the middle of the park.
Perfect for Palace
Premier League experienced, still to reach his peak, and a workhorse who has been through the highs and lows of English football. There is much to like about the possibility of Gomes arriving at Palace.
The Brazilian’s stock has continued to grow with each passing season, and he has shone for Wolves despite their relegation woes. He will undoubtedly be on the move this summer, and Selhurst Park would be an ideal destination for him to continue in the top-flight.
Atleti’s interest is a nuisance, and if it comes down to a choice between the two clubs, it seems likely he’d opt for the Metropolitano. But the South Londoners present an exciting project, which Rio Cardines recently spoke highly of while speaking to Read Crystal Palace after penning a new long-term deal with the club.
