- Crystal Palace could lose Adam Wharton to Liverpool
- Reds are holding negotiations with player’s camp
- English star wants Premier League stay
Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton could be on his way to Liverpool this summer. The English midfielder’s future has been a hot topic of discussion over the past year.
Wharton played a key role in Palace’s 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League semi-final last night. Fans were blown away by his and Daichi Kamada’s performances on the night.
The 22-year-old has starred for the Eagles despite talk over a potential summer transfer. But in the background, it appears his agents are in discussions with Liverpool.
Wharton Holds Talks With Liverpool
A report from Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA claims that the Reds are “in negotiations with Wharton.” Arne Slot’s Merseysiders “want him” and there has been contact between relevant parties.
Wharton reportedly expects to leave Selhurst Park this summer and a move to Anfield wasn’t the only possibility. Manchester United and Real Madrid were also thought to be eyeing the former Blackburn Rovers midfielder.
Moretto claims that the England international “prefers to stay in the Premier League.” His stock has risen throughout his spell with the South Londoners, and he’s appeared 46 times across competitions this season, posting seven assists.
Liverpool are expected to conduct a midfield overhaul this summer amid a dissapointing defence of their Premier League title. Uncertainty is growing over Alexis Mac Allister’s future, and he could be the one to make way.
Wharton has been with Palace since February 2024, when he arrived from Blackburn in a £22m deal. He has three years left on his contract.
An Inevitability
Wharton looks set to be the next high-profile Palace departure, and for many fans, it’s not a surprise. Not just because of his excellent displays under Oliver Glasner ever since he arrived at Selhurst Park.
The young Englishman’s name has been in the rumour mill for over a year now. Any top European club on the lookout for a new midfielder has been linked.
Liverpool would be an interesting club for Wharton, given that they need a reboot. Despite spending £400m last summer, they have faltered, unable to put up a fight while defending their Premier League crown.
If Wharton does end up at Anfield, he’d be a fine addition to a midfield that has been an issue for Slot this season. But he won’t go cheaply and Steve Parish will know that the interest in him can make the club a handsome sum of money.
