One of Crystal Palace’s most important nights of the summer will take place more than 3,000 miles from Selhurst Park.
France face Morocco in Boston on Thursday night, with Palace represented on both sides of the World Cup quarter-final.
For Pierre Sage, the club angle is clear. Chadi Riad could return to Morocco’s defence, while Maxence Lacroix waits for France minutes at a time when Chelsea continue to monitor his future.
Sports Mole predicts Riad will return to Morocco’s starting line-up against France, after the defender missed the last-16 win over Canada. France, meanwhile, remain one of the tournament favourites.
ReadCrystalPalace has already covered how Riad’s Morocco quarter-final gives Palace a major Sage selection clue. This is now more than a World Cup footnote. It is a live Palace squad question.
Riad Gives Sage A Timely Defensive Signal
Riad’s World Cup has arrived at a useful moment for Palace.
Sage has only just started shaping his squad for the new season. He still needs to decide how his defence will look, especially if Palace face serious interest in Lacroix before the window closes.
Riad can help answer part of that question. A strong quarter-final against France would give Palace proof that he can handle elite opposition and high-pressure football.
That matters because his first season in south London never quite settled. Injuries and competition limited his rhythm, but the talent was never in doubt. He is still only 23, left-footed and comfortable enough on the ball to suit a back three.
ReadCrystalPalace has already looked at how Riad’s display against the Netherlands gave Palace a timely reminder. France would be a much harder test.
There is also the Lacroix angle. ReadCrystalPalace recently reported that Palace will demand the right fee and a replacement before considering a Chelsea sale. A France appearance would only keep Lacroix in the shop window.
That creates an awkward balance. Palace can be proud to have defenders involved this deep in the World Cup. They also know strong performances can increase outside interest.
What It Means For Palace Pre-Season
Sage will not get a full group straight away.
Daniel Munoz, Jefferson Lerma and Chris Richards have already moved through their World Cup returns. Riad or Lacroix could now go even deeper into the tournament, which would delay their return to Beckenham.
That is not ideal before a new head coach’s first pre-season. Sage needs time on the grass to build his shape, especially if he plans to use a back three.
But there is an upside. Palace’s World Cup players will return with match sharpness and serious tournament experience. Riad, in particular, could come back with a different level of belief if Morocco survive France.
For a young defender trying to force his way into Sage’s plans, that could be valuable.
The ReadCrystalPalace Verdict
Palace fans should enjoy this one.
A Riad masterclass would strengthen his case for a bigger role under Sage. A Lacroix cameo in a France win would only underline why Chelsea may have to pay heavily if they push again.
The ideal outcome is simple enough from a Palace view: Riad proves he belongs at this level, Lacroix’s value holds, and Sage gets a clearer defensive picture before the real work starts.
For a quiet pre-season week in south London, this is a major Palace night.
