Crystal Palace face renewed interest in Adam Wharton after Chelsea reportedly contacted the midfielder’s representatives over a possible summer move.
Chelsea remain interested in the 22-year-old and have sought information about the conditions surrounding a potential transfer.
However, there has been no reported club-to-club approach or formal offer.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea are maintaining contact with Wharton’s camp, while Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham have cooled their interest because of Palace’s valuation.
Palace have no reason to encourage talks
The distinction between contacting Wharton’s representatives and negotiating with Palace is important.
Wharton remains under contract until 2029, leaving Palace with considerable control over his future. The Eagles are preparing for another season in Europe and can ill afford to lose the midfielder around whom much of their build-up play is constructed.
Reports have placed Palace’s valuation between £80million and £100m. That position has already reduced the number of clubs prepared to pursue a deal seriously.
Chelsea’s admiration is understandable. Wharton offers composure under pressure, progressive passing and Premier League experience despite still being only 22.
Those same qualities make him even more valuable to Pierre Sage.
ReadCrystalPalace recently examined why Chelsea’s growing interest does not weaken Palace’s position, with the club able to demand a premium rather than invite negotiations.
Palace have already seen leading players attract attention after their recent success. Selling Wharton would create a major sporting problem just as Sage begins shaping the squad around his own ideas.
Chelsea can continue speaking to the player’s representatives, but Palace decide whether the market develops any further.
Unless an offer reaches a level the club cannot reasonably reject, Wharton should remain central to their plans.
