Matheus França gave Pierre Sage an immediate selection decision after scoring a hat-trick in Crystal Palace’s 5-1 pre-season victory over Swindon Town.
The Brazilian returned to Palace this summer following a loan spell with Vasco da Gama, with his future at Selhurst Park appearing uncertain.
França responded by producing the standout performance of Sage’s first match in charge. His three goals helped Palace pull away from Swindon during the second half.
Eddie Nketiah scored Palace’s other two goals, while summer signing Óscar Mingueza was included from the start.
According to talkSPORT, Sage selected separate teams for each half as he assessed his squad after only five training sessions.
França forces his way into Palace plans
França has struggled to establish himself since joining Palace from Flamengo in 2023.
Injuries restricted his opportunities before the club sent him back to Brazil. His Palace record stood at only 19 senior appearances and one goal before the loan.
Read Crystal Palace previously examined the decision facing Sage following França’s return, with another loan or permanent departure appearing possible.
A friendly hat-trick does not settle his future, but it provides a strong opening argument.
França remains only 22 and possesses the technical quality to operate behind the striker or from a wider position. Palace’s European schedule could also create more opportunities across the campaign.
His original transfer agreement reportedly included a £4.3m payment to Flamengo should he earn a Ballon d’Or nomination, highlighting the expectations attached to his arrival.
Sage admitted Palace still need greater sharpness and control in possession. However, França has already given the new head coach one significant positive from his first week.
The Brazilian now has an opportunity to turn an uncertain summer into a genuine first-team comeback.
