Crystal Palace step up move for former Arsenal defender

Crystal Palace have opened talks over a Takehiro Tomiyasu transfer after taking the former Arsenal defender on trial during their pre-season camp.

The Japan international is training with Pierre Sage’s squad after becoming a free agent following his departure from Ajax.

BBC Sport reporter Sami Mokbel says Palace are discussing a possible permanent contract. The Eagles view Tomiyasu as an option on the left of their planned three-man defence.

Tomiyasu was also named among the substitutes for Palace’s friendly against RC Lens, although he did not feature.

Takehiro Tomiyasu transfer offers Palace flexibility

The 27-year-old can play across the back line, having operated at centre-back and both full-back positions during his career.

Tomiyasu made 84 appearances for Arsenal before leaving by mutual consent in July 2025. A long-term knee problem restricted him to six minutes during his final season in north London.

He later signed a six-month Ajax contract and made nine appearances before becoming a free agent. His quality is established, but Palace must be satisfied that he can remain available throughout a demanding campaign.

The potential deal forms part of Palace’s defensive rebuild as Maxence Lacroix moves closer to joining Chelsea. Tomiyasu would provide experience without requiring a transfer fee, although he should not be viewed as the club’s only replacement.

Palace are also pursuing Chrislain Matsima and have agreed personal terms with Brest prospect Raphael Le Guen. ReadCrystalPalace recently examined how Palace may already have an answer to the departures of Lacroix and Marc Guéhi.

A Takehiro Tomiyasu transfer could represent smart business if his medical results provide reassurance. His trial allows Palace to assess his condition before committing to a contract.
