- Crystal Palace eyeing Joao Gomes
- Wolves prepared to sell following relegation
- Atletico Madrid are also keen
Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes but face competition from Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian is expected to leave Molineux in the summer.
The Eagles sealed Wolves’ fate on Monday night when they drew 0-0 with West Ham United. This confirmed Rob Edwards’ side’s relegation and as a result probably the exits of several first-team stars.
One of those is Gomes who is one of their main men. He has appeared 37 times across competitions this season, posting one goal and three assists.
Palace Set Sights on Gomes
Gomes’s departure is anticipated and Palace are one of the clubs keen on signing him. That’s according to Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade speaking on ESPN (via Sport Witness).
It’s claimed that the Eagles have previously shown interest in the 25-year-old but so too have Atletico Madrid. Both clubs’ interest is said to be “real” and “ongoing” although there’s no word on whether formal negotiations have taken place.
Gomes has just under four years left on his contract so Wolves are in a strong position regarding recouping a desired fee. But they are keen to cash in on him as they don’t want to risk him decreasing his value as a result of playing in the EFL Championship.
There were suggestions that Gomes could return to Brazil but this is viewed as “highly unlikely.” He has proven Premier League experience which could be hugely beneficial for whoever replaces Oliver Glasner next season.
Gomes’ current manager Rob Edwards gave a glowing verdict of the Brazilian in early March. He said that “he’s a wonderful player” and “shown real glimpses.”
Gomes is a Must Have
There’d be no better way to address a midfield overhaul than swooping for Gomes. He is arguably one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the top-flight, a workhorse in the middle of the park.
If Palace can agree on a reasonable fee with Wolves it would be some way to start a new manager’s reign. He ticks all the boxes for the Eagles with an energetic profile that could refresh a midfield that will lose Daichi Kamada when the Japanese star’s contract expires.
Adam Wharton’s future is uncertain amid interest from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United. Reports claim that the English star expects to leave Selhurst Park.
