Chadi Riad’s Crystal Palace comeback has taken on fresh weight after the defender helped Morocco reach the 2026 World Cup knockout stage.
Palace’s official interview with the 22-year-old detailed the scale of the setbacks he had to absorb. Riad suffered a knee injury after his home debut, then sustained a cruciate ligament problem in training which left him facing another long spell out.
He described that period as mentally difficult, but credited family, friends, teammates and club staff for keeping him on course.
That context now matters. Palace’s official World Cup tracker confirms that Riad completed 90 minutes as Morocco beat Haiti 4-2 in Atlanta to reach the knockouts.
Riad also played a key role in Morocco’s decisive third goal. He met a corner with a header before Soufiane Rahimi converted to put Morocco ahead.
Riad Return Adds Depth For Pierre Sage
For Palace, this is more than a feelgood international line.
Riad had already returned to help the club keep a clean sheet in the Conference League final. His World Cup minutes now strengthen Pierre Sage’s defensive picture before a Europa League season.
Read Crystal Palace has already covered how Riad’s Morocco run has become a major summer storyline.
The former Barcelona academy centre-back is under contract until 2029. That gives Palace a young left-sided defender with tournament rhythm, renewed confidence and clear resale protection.
After so much time in rehabilitation, Riad is no longer just working back to fitness.
He is building evidence that Palace’s patience may yet become a major squad advantage.
