Chadi Riad’s World Cup campaign is over after Morocco lost 2-0 to France in the quarter-finals.
The Crystal Palace defender will now turn his attention back to club football, with his return to pre-season expected soon.
France advanced through second-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, ending Morocco’s run at the last-eight stage. The Guardian’s live report confirmed France’s 2-0 win and their place in the semi-finals.
Riad Has Big Palace Chance Ahead
Riad’s return comes at a useful time for Palace. Pre-season will give him a chance to build rhythm and push for a bigger role under Pierre Sage.
The centre-back arrived at Selhurst Park from Real Betis in 2024 after an impressive season in La Liga. His first campaign at Palace was disrupted, but the club still have long-term belief in his quality.
Riad gives Palace another left-footed centre-back option, which could prove important in Sage’s back three. His composure in possession and recovery pace make him a natural fit if he can stay fit and build consistency.
Morocco’s exit will disappoint him, but it could help Palace. He should now return earlier than the players still involved in the final week of the tournament.
Palace need depth, balance and competition across the defence. Riad has a chance to provide all three when pre-season work begins.
