Crystal Palace face €30m asking price for Portugese youngster

Crystal Palace could have to pay at least €30 million if they want to sign Lecce centre-back Tiago Gabriel this summer.

The Portugal Under-21 international has emerged as a target for the Eagles as they look to strengthen their defence. Lecce, though, are making it clear that they won’t let one of their prized young defenders leave on the cheap.

Gabriel’s current contract runs until next summer, although Lecce have an option to extend it. That puts the Italian club in a strong position despite the defender entering the final year of his deal.

Crystal Palace face competition for Tiago Gabriel

Gabriel only joined Lecce in January 2025 but has quickly become an important part of their side.

The centre-back featured 37 times in the league last season, scoring twice as Lecce successfully avoided relegation. They finished 17th in Serie A to secure another campaign in the Italian top flight.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

West Ham United were interested in Gabriel during the winter transfer window, while Benfica have also been linked with the defender and reportedly see him as one of their priority targets.

Bournemouth are another club mentioned in connection with the 21-year-old.

Palace’s interest is particularly understandable after the Eagles allowed Maxence Lacroix to leave for Chelsea. The club need to strengthen their options at centre-back, and Gabriel has emerged as one of the names on their radar.

However, Palace won’t be able to simply agree personal terms and expect a straightforward deal.

According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno, Lecce aren’t prepared to consider offers below €30m.

Lecce open the door to a transfer

Lecce sporting director Trinchera has acknowledged the growing interest in Gabriel, although he insists there hasn’t been a formal negotiation yet.

“Tiago Gabriel has demonstrated his potential, and several clubs are interested in him, especially international and European clubs. There have been numerous expressions of interest, but no negotiations have yet taken place. However, I don’t rule out the possibility that the conditions are right for negotiations to begin soon.”

That leaves the door open for Palace if they decide Gabriel is the defender they want.

The €30m valuation is the obvious issue. Palace have competition from Benfica and Bournemouth, while the player’s contract situation could make Lecce particularly keen to secure a sizeable fee.

Gabriel’s performances last season certainly explain why his price has climbed. He played a major role in keeping Lecce in Serie A and has already attracted attention from several clubs across Europe, including Benfica.

For Crystal Palace, the need for defensive reinforcements is clear. The question is whether they’re willing to meet Lecce’s demands.

At €30m, Gabriel wouldn’t come cheaply. But with several clubs circling and Lecce standing firm, Palace may have to decide soon whether the Portugal Under-21 defender is worth that investment.
