Crystal Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth nearing permanent Wigan Athletic transfer

Crystal Palace are set to sanction the permanent departure of goalkeeper Joe Whitworth to League One side Wigan Athletic.

According to transfer reporter Alan Nixon (@reluctantnicko), the 22-year-old Academy product who is a lifelong Eagles supporter will join the Latics without an upfront transfer fee. However, Palace have protected their long-term interests by inserting a sell-on clause into the agreement to ensure financial compensation should he excel in South Lancashire.

While the decision to allow a homegrown talent with senior Premier League experience to walk away for free has raised eyebrows among sections of the fanbase, the underlying mechanics of the deal point to a strategic decision by both the player and the club.

Alan Nixon reports permanent Wigan move for Whitworth

Writing on his Patreon page, reliable EFL transfer specialist Alan Nixon revealed that Wigan Athletic are closing in on a permanent deal for Whitworth.

Rather than paying a standard transfer fee upfront, Wigan will secure the shot-stopper on a free transfer, with Palace opting for a percentage-based sell-on clause instead. This allows Wigan to acquire a highly rated young keeper within their budget constraints, while Palace retain future financial upside if Whitworth commands a substantial fee down the line.

A homegrown path from Academy to the Premier League

Whitworth joined the Palace Academy at eight years old and progressed through the youth ranks as one of the club’s most promising modern goalkeepers, known for his sweeping ability, sharp reflexes, and confident distribution.

His breakthrough moment came during the 2022–23 Premier League season. Pushed into the starting lineup during an injury crisis, a 19-year-old Whitworth made his top-flight debut against bitter rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming the youngest goalkeeper to play a Premier League match in Palace’s history. He earned high praise for his composure, following it up with a starting spot against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

To maintain his growth, Whitworth has spent recent seasons building up crucial senior experience out on loan, accumulating over two years of consistent Football League starts.

Why a permanent exit over another loan deal?

For many Palace supporters, news of a free exit naturally raises a key question: Why not send a 22-year-old boyhood fan out on loan for a couple more years instead of letting him leave permanently?

While a loan cycle seems logical on the surface, several practical realities shaped Palace’s decision:

Goalkeeping Pathway Bottleneck: Goalkeeper is a unique position where rotation rarely occurs. With established options locking down the number one shirt at Selhurst Park, Whitworth faced a blocked path to regular Premier League football. Another temporary exit would only delay a definitive career decision.

  • layer Need for Stability: At 22, after already completing consecutive loan spells, Whitworth reached a crossroads where entering a permanent environment was necessary for his career progression rather than living season-to-season on temporary deals.
  • Contract Risk vs. Sell-On Value: Keeping a player on short-term contracts while continually loaning him out risks losing him for nothing via tribunal or contract expiry. By sanctioning a permanent move now with a strong sell-on clause, Palace effectively treat the transfer like an investment—allowing Wigan to develop him while retaining a cut of any future windfall.

For Wigan Athletic, landing Whitworth on a permanent basis represents a major piece of transfer business. The Latics secure a modern, high-upside goalkeeper without tying up immediate capital in an upfront transfer fee.

While seeing a boyhood Eagles fan leave Selhurst Park is bittersweet, the move gives Whitworth the permanent platform he needs to establish himself as a frontline starter, while leaving the door open for Palace to benefit if his potential leads to a big-money move in the future.
