Crystal Palace open talks to bring back former defender

Crystal Palace have opened talks with RC Strasbourg over a potential move for Ben Chilwell.

The Eagles look to strengthen their defensive options before the summer transfer window closes and reportedly are keen to sign the English left-back as per Foot Mercato.

Ben Chilwell previously spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan with Crystal Palace and featured during their FA Cup-winning run.

Crystal Palace now appear keen on bringing back the 29 year old to Selhurst Park.

Palace explore late Ben Chilwell move

Ben Chilwell joined Strasbourg from Chelsea in September 2025 after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge under Enzo Maresca. He has since made 29 appearances for the Ligue 1 club, although regular opportunities have reportedly been difficult to come by.

That could open the door to a return to England.

Ben Jacobs reports that Palace have maintained their interest in Chilwell since his loan spell and now see an opportunity to sign a player they already know.

His contract with Strasbourg runs until the summer of 2027, meaning Crystal Palace could look to strike a relatively inexpensive deal rather than wait until his contract expires.

An agreement between the two clubs has not yet been reached at the time of filing this report, however, so there is still work to do before Ben Chilwell could return to Selhurst Park.

The full-back joined Chelsea from Leicester in 2020 for a reported £50 million, but his career has taken a very different path since then.

Crystal Palace could now offer him another chance to play regularly in England.

With the deadline approaching, talks with Strasbourg will determine whether Chilwell gets the chance to return to Selhurst Park on a permanent basis.
