Ben Chilwell never truly left South London behind, and now the England international is back at Selhurst Park for good.
Crystal Palace have completed the permanent signing of the 29-year-old left-back on deadline day, adding vital top-flight pedigree to Pierre Sage’s squad on a free transfer. Chilwell spent last season across the Channel with BlueCo sister club Strasbourg following his departure from Chelsea, but a pull back to the Premier League proved irresistible.
The defender previously enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Eagles in 2025 under Oliver Glasner, playing an instrumental role in the club’s historic FA Cup triumph. After starting a fresh chapter in Ligue 1 and helping Strasbourg reach the Conference League semi-finals, the defender returns to a changing environment in South London.
Navigating Summer Turmoil and a Slow Start
Palace have endured a turbulent summer transition. Following Glasner’s departure, Pierre Sage stepped into the dugout, inheriting a squad hit by significant departures.
Major sales shaped the window, highlighted by Maxence Lacroix’s £52 million switch to Chelsea and Daniel Muñoz departing to reunite with Glasner at Nottingham Forest. To offset the defensive exodus, the hierarchy moved to bolster the backline with proven Premier League experience, bringing in Takehiro Tomiyasu and Axel Disasi.
However, after dropping points in their opening two league games of the campaign under Sage, the club acted decisively on deadline day to secure Chilwell as their ninth summer addition, following Óscar Mingueza, Dwight McNeil, Evann Guessand, Anan Khalaili, Zavier Gozo, and Honest Ahanor through the door.
Resurgence in France and Fond Memories of South London
Chilwell arrives back in England revitalized. Convinced to join Strasbourg last summer by then-manager Liam Rosenior, the Leicester City academy graduate made 34 appearances in all competition his highest output in a single campaign since 2020/21.
His European exploits were equally impressive, featuring nine times as the French club reached a historic Conference League semi-final before falling to Rayo Vallecano.
Yet, the left-back’s affinity for Palace remained strong throughout his time abroad. When Strasbourg faced the Eagles in the league phase of the competition last season, Chilwell admitted facing his former teammates felt surreal while speaking to Palace TV
“It was unreal to be reunited,” Chilwell confessed, noting how closely he followed his old club. “I still keep in contact with the boys. Whenever Palace are on TV, I always make sure I’m watching, always looking afterwards to see what the scores are – because I loved my time at Palace.”
“It was such a good time in my life. You know, the club, the staff, the players, the fans, the manager… everything about it was brilliant.”
Chairman Steve Parish echoed that sentiment, welcoming back a player whose pedigree proved vital during a landmark period in the club’s modern history.
“With his experience and quality, Ben played a huge part in us winning our first trophy last year,” Parish said.
With 21 international caps, a Champions League medal, and unfinished business in South London, Chilwell now steps back into a Palace shirt tasked with helping Sage steady the ship and reignite their Premier League campaign.
