Borna Sosa returns to the Bundesliga after FC Cologne confirmed a season-long loan deal for the Crystal Palace defender.
The twenty-eight-year-old Croatia international embarks on his second stint in German football following a prior five-year spell with VfB Stuttgart. Cologne sporting director Thomas Kessler finalised the agreement to make Sosa the club’s twelfth summer transfer window signing.
Palace brought the left-back to Selhurst Park in the summer of 2025. Sosa immediately tasted success by debuting in the FA Community Shield victory against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
He accumulated eighteen appearances across all competitions during his time in south London. That total featured six outings within the club’s victorious UEFA Conference League campaign.
Familiar Grounds Await the Croat
Sosa brings extensive German football experience back to the Rheinland. He previously logged one hundred fifteen appearances for Stuttgart between 2018 and 2023.
His extensive career path also includes stints with Dinamo Zagreb, Ajax, and Torino. Furthermore, he has earned twenty-seven caps for the Croatian national team.
Head coach René Wagner integrated his squad through a 2-1 DFB Cup victory against Würzburger Kickers and a 3-2 Bundesliga opening win over Hoffenheim.
Immediate Debut Possibility Looms
Sosa highlighted the famous atmosphere at his new club upon arrival.
“Cologne has one of the best atmospheres in the league,” Sosa stated. “Now I am really looking forward to experiencing that feeling as a Cologne player here in the stadium.”
Kessler emphasized the tactical qualities the defender brings to the squad.
“With his strong left foot, his desire to get forward, and his quality crossing, he gives us different options in our game,” Kessler noted.
Sosa could make his immediate debut against his former club, Stuttgart, when Cologne returns to action on Friday.
