Crystal Palace forward Romain Esse has completed a loan move back to Championship club Millwall until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The 21-year-old attacker initially joined Palace from the Lions in January 2025 after progressing through their academy system. During his time at Selhurst Park, Esse made 17 appearances across all competitions. He notably scored on his debut against Brentford and featured twice during the club’s successful FA Cup run in the 2024/25 season.
Following that campaign, he spent the latter half of the following season on loan at Coventry City, where he contributed two goals in 18 appearances to help the Sky Blues secure the Championship title. Having not featured for the Eagles in the early stages of the 2026/27 campaign, he now heads back to South London for regular minutes under Millwall manager Alex Neil.
Impact in South London and Beyond
During his tenure with the Eagles, Esse accumulated 17 appearances across all competitions. He delivered an unforgettable moment on his debut by scoring against Brentford at Selhurst Park, and he subsequently contributed two appearances during the club’s successful FA Cup run in 2024/25.
Seeking further developmental minutes, the young forward spent the latter half of the following season on loan at Coventry City. He made 18 appearances for the Sky Blues and scored twice, ultimately helping the club secure the Championship title. Having featured sparingly for Palace at the start of the 2026/27 season, the club sanctioned this temporary exit to ensure he receives consistent first-team football.
The Lions Welcome Back a Familiar Spark
Millwall secured Esse as their second deadline-day arrival and 12th signing of the summer transfer window, adding him to Alex Neil’s squad for the remainder of the second-tier campaign.
Steve Gallen, Millwall’s Director of Football, expressed immense satisfaction at bringing the academy graduate back to his first home.
“I am delighted to get Romain back at the club,” Steve Gallen said.
“When I first came in, he was the shining light around here. He went off to Crystal Palace, in the Premier League, which was great for him at that time, but he hasn’t played as much – so we’re going to give him a real opportunity again.
“It’s great news for the football club and it’s great to see him back here.”
As Esse embarks on this latest chapter back at his roots, Crystal Palace will monitor his progress closely. This loan move provides the young attacker with the ideal platform to regain his sharpest form and secure the consistent playing time he needs to fulfill his Premier League potential.
